Since its initial construction in 1765, Summerseat has depended on citizens of Morrisville to protect and maintain the structure. Over 250 years later, the building still stands in its original location, encapsulating history and providing important context for local education.
Historic Summerseat is the site where George Washington planned the pivotal Battle of Trenton which occurred December 26, 1776. Summerseat is the only house known to have been owned by two signers of the United States Declaration of Independence, Founding Fathers George Clymer and Robert Morris.
Summerseat was built in 1765 by Adam Hoops. The home was subsequently transferred to his son-in-law, Thomas Barclay, by the time the Revolutionary War began. It became a Continental Headquarters throughout the Revolutionary War.
George Washington stayed at Summerseat to rest and plan after his army’s flight through New York and New Jersey. It is here he formulated his idea which culminated in the historic Battle of Trenton and the Battles to follow of the 10 Crucial Days, which was a turning point in the War.
The house continues to reflect 1700's–1800's colonial style in the tastfully decorated rooms, encapsualting history and providing important context for local education. This original building is maintained by Historic Morrisville Society and open to the public for tours and lectures.
We hope you join us in our mission to provide education, unite the community, inspire future generations, and continue to preserve this Historic Morrisville treasure.
